The Magpie Project - News Product & Audience Strategy for News Organizations

Hi, I'm Matthew. I started the Magpie Project to help news organizations find success with their digital product and audience efforts by accessing talent and expertise that may not otherwise be within reach. I partner with each organization and find the right person or people to help them grow, cultivate and better serve their audiences. I work with product leaders, audience specialists, fundraisers, data scientists, software developers and journalists with skills across data, design, and video production. We work as solo practitioners, in pairs, and in flexible fractional teams that provide support across a variety of areas. We do this in partnership with you and we focus on execution, not just coaching and consulting.

PROCESS

Finding out if this will work for you is simple. There is no sales pitch or demo. If you reach out we'll have a conversation about your needs and budget. From that conversation I'll draft a proposal that makes the costs and deliverables clear. If your project is large, complex, or multifaceted I'll propose a small, affordable, discovery effort designed to help me construct a proposal that is accurate in terms of timeline, scope and cost.

As we find the right partners to work with you, I will present resumes and schedule interviews or, if you prefer, simply assemble a team that best suits your needs.

Hi again. Thank you for visiting this site and thanks for your consideration for allowing me the opportunity to work with you. I've been working in news, nonprofit and platform technology for almost two decades. I have deep experiences in news product development, AI, content management systems, building native applications, selecting donation and fundraising tools and many other things but the two things I'm best at are making good decisions about what to work on next and even better decisions about who will do that work well.

My partner is Kate DeVivo. Kate founded KTD+ in 2021 with the vision to match companies and organizations with the talent they needed to execute strategically critical initiatives. Her innovative approach helps companies control costs while developing projects, products and content of the highest quality. She paved the way and made The Magpie Project possible.
